Our Strategy and Development Leader, Klaas Ramo Molapisi attended the HyperionDev tech week as a speaker discussing Web Dev Experiences – Our duty. The intention in the talk/discussion was to encourage the audience (developers) to change their thinking on their duty as web developers. Some key points include:
- Status of the digital world
- Being part of the solution
- Taking a sustainable approach
The experiences for developers differ and it can be tricky to know our role in the world and industry. The simpler definition of our duty is being able to apply a technical capability of coding to device a solution to a problem. However, this is quite narrow and does not attach to a societal purpose and fails to address sustainability. The fact that we are able to build is not as important as there is a need to create shelter. Hence we are driven to ask ourselves of the contribution we need to make.
Tech for the sake of tech has added to a digital perspective that has created a paralysing value of the digital space. In addition, the development of AI tools and no code platforms have negatively fueled the client perspective forcing a perfect economy on small businesses to compete on their pricing. However, these were caused by people within the industry failing to give value and differentiation between technical ability and solution.
Our approach in the digital business has created a negative view of the value of the industry. Our clients cannot see a variation between us, AI, no code platforms etc. we are determined to do things differently to reposition our digital business and create a new perspective of the digital world.
